Bonnet Macaque focusing on some fruits
The Bonnet Macaque (Macaca radiata) is a monkey species endemic to southern India where it can be found in a wide array of habitats ranging from forests to open grasslands. The animals have also become used to humans and roam through villages or gather around temples. Originally their diet consisted of fruits, seeds and insects, but now many monkeys became pickpockets stealing food and snacks near bus stations or raiding plantations. Nevertheless, the outstanding feature of the Bonnet Macaque is the peculiar tuft of hair on its head. Remember it and you will have no problem differentiating the species from the North Indian Rhesus Macaque (Macaca mulatta). I have photographed these monkeys in September 2011 on a trip through Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka.

My goodness, the one with the bottle is allmost scary…
Talking about the contact between humans and animals…in a way when you say they can be found in temples, I think ok, that’s stil sort of acceptable, but when it comes down to hanging around at busstations, This is when we have failed (I think). Nice images Matthias!
